Register to vote: Up to one million Londoners not on register ahead of deadline

Up to a million Londoners are not registered to vote with just hours to go until the deadline.

The Electoral Commission said almost seven million people are not registered or are registered incorrectly ahead of the deadline for registration at 11.59pm on Monday.

It came as analysis found the Conservatives could win a majority of more than 100 seats in June 8’s election if young people between 18 and 24 stay away from the polls in similar numbers to 2015.

Turnout among 18 to 24-year-olds at the 2015 General Election was estimated to be just 43 per cent, compared with 77 per cent of 55 to 64-year-olds and 78 per cent of people aged 65 and over.

Based on current polling, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn would need a much higher turnout among young people, where his support is strongest, plus a general increase in popularity across all age ranges.

More than two million applications to vote have been made since the snap election was announced, although not all of these will be new applicants or people who are eligible to vote.

This year’s election has seen high-profile figures including Danny DeVito and grime artist Jme urge young people to register to vote. Photo-messaging service Snapchat and taxi app Uber users have also been targeted with adverts urging people to register in an effort to get young people signed up.

An Electoral Commission spokesman said: "With the registration deadline in sight, the commission is advising everyone who has not yet registered to do so as soon as possible to ensure that they can have their say on 8 June."
