Reign has come to an end after four seasons, but some viewers were left wondering what had happened to one major character – Bash. Well, it turns out that there is an answer, although probably not the one you wanted.

The last episode saw Mary, Queen of Scots (Adelaide Kane) executed by axe and with Francis (Toby Regbo) in the afterlife.

Co-creator Laurie McCarthy has revealed that she actually wanted to bring Bash (Torrance Coombs) back for Mary's (Adelaide Kane) send-off. That never materialised, though – and Bash was killed off-screen.

"Yes, absolutely," McCarthy told TVGuide when asked if she considered writing in Bash and Kenna. "But many things complicated the possibility – not only the actors' availabilities, but the amount of characters we had on our existing canvas at any given time, not to mention in three nations (Scotland, England and France).

"Bash and Kenna are characters I will always love – and I adore Torrance Coombs and Caitlyn Stasey as well."

Bash's death was actually never seen on screen or even referenced. And yet, if you're holding out hope that Bash is still alive, McCarthy has some bad news for you.

"If you were a careful viewer, rather than a hopeful Bash lover, it was pretty clear that he had met an end," she told TVLine. "Rizzio had kind of been touched by [Bash's] spirit. I don't know how he went, but he did not survive."

Oh.

Reign aired on The CW in the US.
