Renfrewshire councillor blasts failure to repair A761 drainage issue
A Bridge of Weir councillor has blasted the lack of action from Renfrewshire Council and Scottish Water on a high-risk flood road.
Councillor James MacLaren, who represents Bridge of Weir, Bishopton and Langbank, says he has reported issues on the stretch of road for years – but no permanent solution has been delivered.
The Scottish Conservative councillor is demanding urgent action” to tackle drainage and flooding issues on the A761 approaching Bridge of Weir.

He says that, with winter fast approaching, a failure from Scottish Water to fix these problems has the potential to cause “carnage” on the road for motorists.
Councillor MacLaren also says that the council’s roads department has identified the issue is with a burst pipe, and that Scottish Water has been notified but the organisation has failed to lay out a timescale for the works to be carried out.
“This stretch of road has repeatedly suffered with flooding and drainage issues,” he said. “I have reported issues to the council for years but still no solution has been delivered. That is simply not good enough given that Scottish Water has been notified of these problems.
“With winter rapidly approaching, this part of the A761 can be a real black spot when it floods. There could be real carnage facing motorists if Scottish Water doesn’t come and fix these issues as a matter of urgency.
“I will be continuing to push them to do so for the sake of motorist safety and to get these flooding issues sorted once and for all.”
Scottish Water admits it knows there are historical issues with the stretch of road approaching the Renfrewshire village.
The company says that it investigated an issue in the area in September after being made aware of an incident by a customer.
It says that the stretch of road where issues have been raised doesn’t have a water main – but a nearby road does and staff will investigate.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “There is a historical surface water issue at this location on Bridge of Weir Road and we attended in September to investigate, following contact from a customer.
“There is no water main on this stretch of Bridge of Weir Road but we will attend again to assess a main on nearby Bankend Road, which runs parallel, and check our infrastructure there.”
A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of flooding and drainage issues on the A761 approaching Bridge of Weir. Officers have informed Scottish Water and await an update following their investigations.”
