The Repair Shop star Jay Blades has been charged with controlling and coercive behaviour.

The TV presenter, best known for presenting the hit BBC show, appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court today (September 13).

ITV News is reporting that court documents show Blades has been charged with controlling and coercive behaviour against his estranged wife Lisa Zbozen.

In a statement, West Mercia Police confirmed the charge and that it had launched an investigation after being called out to an incident on May 3.

"Fifty-four year-old Jason Blades of Claverley in Wolverhampton has been charged with controlling and coercive behaviour," the statement read.

"He appeared at Kidderminster Magistrates Court this morning (Friday 13th September) and has been bailed to appear at Worcester Crown Court on Friday 11th October."

Following news of the charge, the BBC dropped a scheduled repeat episode of David & Jay's Touring Toolshed – featuring Blades and the actor David Jason – which was set to air on Friday's BBC One schedule.

"It would not be appropriate to comment on ongoing legal proceedings," a spokesperson for the broadcaster said.

Buckinghamshire New University also announced on Friday that Blades has resigned as chancellor of the organisation "with immediate effect", adding it will be making no further comment.

Blades rose to fame on The Repair Shop and was appointed an MBE for services to craft in the 2021 Birthday Honours list. He has also hosted factual miniseries for Channel 5 including Jay Blades: No Place Like Home and Jay Blades' East End Through Time.

In early May, it was reported that Blades and Zbozen had separated after 18 months of marriage.

Shortly afterwards, a representative for the TV star confirmed to The Mirror that Blades was taking a break from filming on The Repair Shop, giving him time to "take stock" following the death of his uncle.

In August, a spin-off series titled Repair Shop on the Road was confirmed to be on the way.
