Air India Sends Replacement Plane to 232 People Stranded in Russia

A replacement plane departed Mumbai, India, on Wednesday, June 7, to collect 216 passengers and 16 crew from an Air India flight that was diverted to Magadan, Russia, after suffering engine issues en route to San Francisco on Tuesday.

Footage released by Air India on Wednesday shows the replacement plane departing for Magadan.

Air India said the replacement flight was expected to land in Magadan early on June 8. They said an Air India team was on board “to provide any support that the passengers and staff at GDX may require.” GDX is the airport code for Magadan.

The ferry flight was also carrying sufficient “food to cater to all passengers on the onward flight scheduled from GDX to San Francisco (SFO).”

Air India said passengers were staying in “makeshift accommodation” given the “infrastructural limitations around the remote airport.” Credit: Air India via Storyful
