Cardinals weekend series with Cubs postponed after three more positive coronavirus tests

Baseball has hit another coronavirus bump.

The St. Louis Cardinals, due to return to action Friday after a coronavirus outbreak hit the team, will not play their scheduled series against the Chicago Cubs this weekend in St. Louis after two new players and a staff member tested positive for COVID-19.

Overall, the Cardinals have had nine players and seven staff members test positive over the last eight days. That group includes Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong.

Here is the league’s official announcement:

The Office of the Commissioner has been informed that a St. Louis Cardinals staff member and two players tested positive from samples collected over the last two days. Out of an abundance of caution, and to ensure that all infected Cardinal players and staff members have been identified, the games between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Saturday, August 8th and Sunday, August 9th have been postponed. Major League Baseball will continue to provide updates as they become available.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network says this new positive test came after three days of negatives. The team’s outbreak hit over last weekend, with MLB pausing their season Monday.

Friday could have been the first day since July 26 that all 30 teams would have played. The Cardinals have not played since July 29.

Following these new positive tests, there’s no telling how long it will be before the Cardinals can return.

The Cubs have reportedly traveled home to Chicago. They will resume play Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians.
