Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway are pretty far from becoming best buddies on the set of ‘Ocean’s Eight’, according to reports.

In fact, the Australian Oscar winner and the ‘Les Mis’ star are said to be ‘butting heads’.

“Cate’s very laid back and easygoing, but Anne’s rubbing her the wrong way,” a source has told Aussie magazine Woman’s Day.

“They had a few angry words and didn’t speak for a few days. Now they’re trying to keep things cordial… but it’s difficult to say the least.”

Hathaway has long been dogged by rumours that she’s tricky to work with, and she’s – doubtless unfairly – been branded ‘the most-hated star in Hollywood’ in the past too.

James Franco, who she famously bombed with presenting the bafflingly ill-advised 2011 Oscars, broached the subject of her polarising effect back in 2013 in a conversation with Howard Stern.

“Everyone sort of hates Anne Hathaway, and I’ve explained that I do too, and I don’t even know why sometimes,” Stern said.

“She just so affected and actress-y that even when she wins an award she’s out of breath and then she has the standard joke that sounds like it’s been written for her. And it all seems so scripted and acted.

“She comes off like the goody two-shoes actress and it’s just fun to sort of hate her. Hate is a strong word, but I dislike her, even though she is a great actress. Is that accurate?” Stern then asked.

“I’m not an expert on – I guess they’re called ‘Hatha-haters’ – but I think that’s what maybe triggers it,” Franco said.

The ‘Ocean’s 11’ series spin-off, featuring a principally female cast, and directed by Gary Ross, features an impressive number of A-list stars.

Alongside Blanchett and Hathaway are Sandra Bullock, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Dakota Fanning, with roles too for Damian Lewis and Matt Damon, reprising his role as conman and pick-pocket Linus Cauldwell.

It’s due out in June, 2018.
