Rescued Magpie's Friendship With Cat Is Still a Work in Progress

It may be a slightly bizarre sight to most, but to rural Western Australia pet owner Anandii Macrides, the image of her pet magpie and one of her cats playfully interacting is decidedly normal.

Macrides, who lives in Porongurup, shared footage of her rescued magpie, Ninja, playing with Michonne the cat. She told Storyful that the footage, which was recorded in August, is typical of a day in her home.

Ninja, she said, “had been blown from her nest one very windy day, and was thankfully spotted by my lovely man. That’s how she joined our family.”

Michonne had kittens around the same time as Ninja entered the home, and the “kittens and magpie grew up together and made friends almost instantly.”

Michonne, though, was slightly harder to win over, and in the footage featured here, the cat takes a gentle swipe at the magpie at one point.

However, Macrides said that while Michonne “took a little while longer to befriend Ninja,” they are actually “great mates now.” She added that Ninja isn’t caged and “is free to come and go as she pleases, but she has chosen to stick around … much to my delight,” and be a big part of her “very odd family,” which also includes a number of kangaroos.
