Rescuers find body of boy, 4, swept away by Arkansas floodwaters

The body of a four-year-old boy who was swept away by floodwaters in Arkansas has been recovered, police have said.

The boy and his sister and mother were stranded in high water near Hindsville when their vehicle was swept off a road and over a low-water bridge on Saturday, Madison County Sheriff's Office said.

The woman attempted to save her children, but they were pulled from her arms after getting out of the car.

She was found around a mile downstream and was treated in hospital, but her son's body was recovered on Monday night. The little girl has not been located.

Volunteers have been searching on the banks and in canoes along a four-mile stretch of Glade Creek, where the vehicle was swept away.

The family, who have not been identified, were reportedly moving to a new home on Saturday when they became caught up in the flooding.

At least 16 people have been killed as storms, tornadoes and flooding hit the US Midwest and South.

Several states have been braced for more bad weather as a new band of storms was set to roll eastward stretching from Alabama into Ohio.

Missouri has seen 143 water rescues, with hundreds of people forced to evacuate and water levels breaking a levee northwest of St Louis. A 57-mile stretch of Interstate 44 has been closed.

The Mississippi River is above flood stage at several points, including Cape Gierardeau in Missouri where it is expected to crest later this week within half a foot of the all-time water level record of 48.9ft.

At least four tornadoes touched down in east Texas, killing four people.

A seven-year-old boy was electrocuted after unplugging an electric golf cart and dropping the cord in water in Mississippi.

And in Tennessee, a two-year-old girl died after she was struck by a metal football goal post thrown by strong winds.
