A swan that brought "endless smiles" and was adored by staff and visitors to Healing Manor over the years has tragically died after being attacked by an "uncontrollable" dog off its lead.

Volunteers from Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue rushed to the aid of Sid the swan on Monday afternoon after the incident at Healing Manor, where he had lived for more than eight years.

After hearing the commotion, staff at Healing Manor acted swiftly and launched a boat to rescue Sid, who had made his way into the water following the attack.

Volunteers from the wildlife rescue organisation arrived at the scene a short time later and took the swan - who was in a "collapsed state" - to Clee Vets in their wildlife ambulance to receive urgent care and undergo X-rays.

But sadly, Sid's injuries were so severe that there was no possibility of rehabilitation.

In a tribute to the swan that touched so many hearts, Healing Manor wrote on Facebook: "Today, we say a heartbreaking goodbye to our beloved resident swan, Sid, who tragically lost his life in an incident involving an uncontrollable dog off its lead.

"Sid was not just a swan; he was an icon of Healing Manor, a cherished companion to our team and guests, and a true character that brought endless smiles and stories over the last eight years.

"Sid, the most photographed swan at countless weddings, was adored by all who visited. From guests trapped in their rooms by his determined presence at the door (probably hoping for snacks) to the sausages swiped from plates in the grounds, he made his mark in unforgettable ways. Let’s not forget his legendary love for pastries – we’d wager Sid holds the world record for most pain au chocolats devoured by a swan.

"To Sid, thank you for the joy, laughter, and love you brought to Healing Manor. You’ll forever be part of our story, and we’ll miss your antics dearly.

"We also want to take this moment to urge dog owners to please be responsible. Whether walking through our grounds or around the village, always keep your dogs on a lead and under control. Let’s work together to protect the wildlife that makes our community so special.

"Rest peacefully, Sid. The lake won’t be the same without you."

Such was his presence, he was even listed as an official team member on the venue's website with the job title of 'Security & Part Time Escape Artist'.

Volunteers from Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue also issued a "heartfelt plea" to urge dog owners to be responsible when walking near wildlife.

Taking to Facebook, they said: "This is a heartfelt plea as we find ourselves too often reporting incidents of dog attacks on wildlife.

"We urge all dog owners to be responsible when walking near wildlife. Keep your dogs under control at all times, and if you're in an area where wildlife is present, ensure they are on a lead. These simple measures can prevent incidents like this.

"These incidents are entirely preventable. They are devastating, place unnecessary strain on wildlife rescues, and result in needless loss of life. This case has been referred to Humberside Police's Wildlife Crime Officers for investigation."
