Residents in Florida Shelter From Hurricane Ian as Biden Declares Major Emergency

Residents of Daytona Beach Shores were asked to continue to shelter in place as US President Joe Biden issued a major disaster declaration for the state of Florida following the impact of Hurricane Ian on Thursday, September 29.

The City of Daytona Beach Shores issued a plea for residents to continue to shelter at around 6 am local time on Thursday. They wrote: “Please continue to shelter in place. Stay off the roads. We have heavy debris, and it is not safe to be outdoors. We will assess for damages once it’s daylight and the worst has passed.”

Volusia County Emergency Management said on Facebook on Thursday morning that areas of the county had received up to 13 inches of rain and were expecting up to six more.

A National Hurricane Center forecast showed Hurricane Ian moving across the area north of Orlando in the early hours of Thursday, with tropical-storm-force winds expected. Credit: City of Daytona Beach Shores via Storyful
