Residents and Tourists Evacuated From Gili Islands After Deadly Lombok Earthquake

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake off the Indonesian island of Lombok killed at least 91 people and injured hundreds more on Sunday, August 5.

These videos and photos were captured by officials from Humas Basarnas, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency. They show hundreds of people being evacuated from the Gili Islands, an archipelago near northwest Lombok, on Monday, August 6, after the earthquake.

Posting the videos on Twitter, an agency spokesman said it expected to evacuate 700 people by boat from the islands. One video showed a person being transferred to shore on a stretcher.

Meanwhile national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said three ships were used to transfer about 1,000 people from the islands to safety, local news site Detik News reported. No casualties were reported.

The earthquake sparked a tsunami warning which was later cancelled, the Jakarta Post reported. Nugroho said thousands of buildings had been damaged, according to the report. The earthquake also impacted the neighboring island of Bali with minor damage reported at Ngurah Rai International Airport.
