Residents without water in Cheshire as demand for bottled leaves shelves empty

Supermarket shelves in Cheshire have been left empty this evening as shoppers have raced to buy bottled water amid an ongoing supply issue.

Many residents have been left dry since Sunday (September 8), when a leak in the Vyrnwy Aqueduct was identified. Others have been experiencing low pressure, which has continued while repair works take place.

United Utilities said that work to repair the leak is 'well underway' but apologised for the issues customers are facing, adding they are doing 'all we can' to get service back to normal.

Pictures taken this evening show supermarkets sold out of bottled water in the region as customers race to stock up on the essential.

A United Utilities spokesperson said: “Parts of Cheshire including Sandbach, Congleton and Nantwich have been experiencing low pressure this afternoon following the detection of a leak on the Vyrnwy Aqueduct.

"While the repair on the aqueduct is well underway, customers in these areas are continuing to experience poor water pressure or no water. We are working to minimise the impact and to restore supplies as soon as possible, including using our fleet of alternative supply vehicles which people may well notice in the area.

"We will continue to keep customers updated via text and information on the United Utilities website. We’re very sorry about this and we are working around the clock to get supplies back to normal as quickly as possible.”
