A retired teacher who had been out walking with her husband has been named as the person who was fatally struck by a train near Starcross railway station earlier this month.

Emergency services were called to a railway line in Powderham on Saturday, January 18, following reports of a casualty on the tracks. An inquest has since opened into the death.

During the short hearing held at Exeter Coroners Court, it was confirmed that Kenton resident Pamela Browne died at the location. The 75-year-old was born in Ealing.

Alison Longhorn, area coroner for Devon, said: "The circumstances are the 75 year old female had not rejoined her husband at their pre-arranged meeting point while they were out on a walk.

"She was found a short while later having been struck by a train and was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. There are no suspicious circumstances.

"The precise medical cause of death has not yet been determined."

The inquest was adjourned for a full hearing to be held at a later date. Following the death, British Transport Police said the incident was not being treated as suspicious and that a file was being prepared for the coroner.
