Physical training staff at Faslane had twin reasons to celebrate recently with the opening of a newly upgraded gymnasium and the presentation of a prestigious award to one of their staff.

Naval Base Commander Clyde, Commodore Sharon Malkin, cut the ribbon to officially open the refurbished SASH Gymnasium within the site’s Sportsdrome facility.

The gym revamp was coordinated by Warrant Officer Physical Trainer (WOPT) Vercoe, with assistance from OP HIND - the Royal Navy’s Human Performance team - who provided £400,000 on behalf of Director Submarines.

Rebranded as “The Trident Gym”, the facility will support military personnel who are hoping to improve their health, wellbeing, and personal fitness by promoting a life-long exercise habit.

The gym includes an area for boxing, strength conditioning, and functional fitness. It will also be used by Submarine Qualifying Course (SMQ) students, keeping them physically and mentally fit to fight and win.

Shortly after the official opening, Commodore Malkin presented Leading Physical Trainer (LPT) Lavender with the Herbert Lott Award, recognising his outstanding leadership and organisational skills.

These were clearly demonstrated during HM Naval Base Clyde’s Families’ Day back in July this year where LPT Lavender played a pivotal role. His exceptional efforts ensured a fantastic experience for both Royal Navy families and the wider community.

LPT Lavender liaised with stakeholders to orchestrate a variety of activities which catered to all ages and interests, including a petting zoo, bird of prey display, climbing wall, bouncy castle, and displays from 43 Commando and local emergency services.

His meticulous planning, attention to detail, and flawless execution made him a shoo-in for the Herbert Lott Award.
