Forget about yesterday’s budget, the news we’ve all been waiting for is now in: the countrywide breakdown of Britain’s favourite pies.

Online food ordering platform hungryhouse.co.uk is marking British Pie Week with some tasty research into the nation’s most beloved pies – and there’s a shock north/south divide.

Topping the UK-wide list is that old classic, the steak and ale pie (22 per cent), followed by another pie with timeless appeal, steak and potato (17 per cent).

In the city pie-off, 53 per-cent of Leeds residents quizzed voted for steak and ale, while the people of Newcastle and Liverpool agreed that steak and potato was the number one choice.

But in shock news for Londoners, banoffee pie came top of the capital’s pie list, with 44 per cent finding the crumbled biscuit base and banana, cream and toffee topping impossible to resist.

Londoners certainly have a sweet tooth, with nearly two thirds (65 per cent) choosing either apple or banoffee pie as their favourite.

Research also found that pie-purchasers from London and Bristol order an average of 10 pies per year – double the amount being eaten up north. Might northerners really have fallen out of love with the humble pie?

Alice Mrongovius, CEO of hungryhouse said: “With pie sales soaring over British Pie Week, we wanted to celebrate this much loved takeaway dish by doing some digging on the nations pie-eating habits.

“Whether you’re a fan of a traditional steak and ale or are barmy for a pork pie, our research proves Britain remains to have its eyes on the pies”.
