Revealed: The meat that makes Britain's ultimate Sunday roast complete

It’s a weekend staple for many British families, but what exactly does the ultimate Sunday roast involve?

Well it turns out the majority (33 per cent) of Brits favour a beef-based feast, according to a new YouGov Omnibus study on the subject.

Chicken came a close second (27 per cent), followed by lamb (20 per cent) and pork (6 per cent). A meat-free option was the preference for some however, with 8 per cent of people saying they’d rather have a veggie main.

There was a gender divide, with women more likely to opt for chicken than men (32 per cent compared to 21 per cent) while more men liked beef (37 per cent compared to 29 per cent).

Younger people were also more likely to choose chicken, with 38 per cent of 18-24 year olds saying that was their meat of choice, compared to just 23 per cent of those aged 65 and over.

Older folk mostly favour beef – 41 per cent of those aged 65-plus said this was their preference, compared to just 18 per cent of 18-24s.

There was no disputing Britain’s favourite trimming, however, with 89 per cent of people saying they like roast potatoes to be a feature of their ideal roast.

Next on the list were gravy (76 per cent), Yorkshire pudding (69 per cent), roast parsnips (49 per cent) and boiled broccoli (45 per cent).

There was a gender divide here, too, with women more likely to chooses vegetables – particularly broccoli (51 per cent versus 38 per cent of men).

The biggest age divide concerns pigs in blankets, with 52 per cent of 18-24s saying they’re a Sunday lunch essential, while only 12 per cent of those aged 65 and over consider them necessary.

Older people would rather have a serving of green beans with their lunch, with 39 per cent saying this is a staple side, compared to just 19 per cent of 18-24s.
