The most popular names parents picked for babies born last year in each borough of London are revealed today.

After the official list of the most popular baby names in 2017 showed Oliver and Olivia remain the UK's most popular names, the data for London has been broken down borough-by-borough.

It shows names like Alexander, James, Noah and Sophie are popular in affluent parts of west London. In eastern boroughs Amelia, Olivia, Oliver and Muhammad were more popular.

The breakdown comes from the official ONS data that was released yesterday.

UK-wide, Hunter and Aurora were two new entrants in the top 100 names for boys and girls.

Oliver and Olivia remain the most popular names, holding the pole positions since 2013 and 2016 respectively.

David remains a commonly chosen name, and although its popularity has waned in recent years, the ONS said it has had an "unusual" peak in parts of north London.

Half of parents stick to popular names

679,106 babies were born in 2017 (1% more boys than girls)

50% of boys were given a name in the top 100 (174,064) and 41% of girls (136,004)

18,950 babies were given a unique name - only appearing once in the statistics.

Nigel is making a small comeback after being thought "all but extinct," with 11 baby boys given the name in 2017.

There were six new entries in the top 100 most popular girls’ names: Aurora, Orla, Edith, Bonnie, Lyla and Hallie, which replaced Lexi, Zoe, Maddison, Sarah, Felicity and Lydia.

But London's choice of baby names tells a slightly different story.

While well known names like Oliver, Joshua, Amelia and Olivia take the top spot for most Boroughs, Leo, Alexander, Noah, Maryam, Isla and Isabella were also popular in the capital.

Muhammed was a remarkably popular name, placing first in seven London Boroughs including north east areas, and Hillingdon and Hounslow.

ONS statistician Nick Stripe said on the national picture: “Although Oliver and Olivia remained the most popular baby names in 2017, some fascinating changes took place beneath them. Leo entered the boys’ top 10 for the first time, whilst Hunter rocketed into the top 100, also for the first time, reaching number 78.

"Sarah, the most popular name for baby girls throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s, dropped out of the top 100 for the first time since our records began in 1904. Brand new entries into the top 100 for girls include the names Aurora and Hallie.
