We've not yet seen Rian Johnson's take on Episode VIII, but the director is already looking forward to taking on that brand new trilogy.

The three all-new movies, which will be separate from the Skywalker Saga, were confirmed earlier this month – and we couldn't be more excited about them.

Unsurprisingly, neither could Rian, who's been opening up about his first (tiny) steps into a new galaxy far, far away.

Appearing at a recent fan event, Johnson admitted that although he's not thought too much about the stories, he can't wait to explore all of their "potential".

"There's just so much potential and I can't wait to jump into it," he said (via Heroic Hollywood).

"What makes me so excited about it is the idea of doing a new story on the big canvas of three movies in this world."

You and us both, mate.

Lucasfilm and Disney announced their plans to expand the Star Wars universe a few weeks ago, revealing that Rian will be branching out from the familiar faces of the franchise.

Praising Rian's Star Wars vision, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy announced: "[Rian's] a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career.

"Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

We can catch a glimpse of his vision when The Last Jedi finally hits UK cinemas on December 14 and US cinemas on December 15.
