Richard Hammond apologises to his family as he posts video from his hospital bed after crash

Richard Hammond has broken his silence after being involved in a serious car crash whilst filming The Grand Tour yesterday.

The star miraculously escaped the wreckage with just a fractured knee after he managed to crawl out seconds before the vehicle burst into flames.

Proving that he still has his sense of humour, Richard posted a video entitled ‘I’m Not Dead’ earlier today, apologising to his family as he assured fans that he is okay.

Posting for Drive Tribe, Richard can be seen laying in his hospital bed in Switzerland and is joined by co-star James May as he jokes: “I’m here in a hospital in Switzerland.

“This is my knee that they’re going to turn from [holding up an X-ray] this into this, giving me a Swiss Army knee. Hopefully later today.

“I’d like to thank all of the medical professionals who got me by air ambulance to the hospital and have dealt with me ever since.”

Thinking of his family, Richard continued: “I’d also like to say thank you to James May who smuggled in a bottle of gin for me last night – I shouldn’t have said that out loud – and most importantly sorry to my wife Mindy and my daughters.

“Izzy and Willow. I’m sorry for being such a colossal… Thank you. More news later.”

The video comes after Richard’s co-stars, Jeremy Clarkson and James May, admitted that they feared the 47-year-old presenter was dead after his Rimac Concept One plunged 100ft down a hill and flipped over several times before landing upside down.

Show producer Andy Willman told The Mirror: “Jeremy and James both raced down to the scene of the crash as soon as it happened. When they saw the wreckage on fire they thought Richard was dead. It was really bad.

“They were staggered he had got out of it alive, because there was just nothing left. Everyone is so relieved. If Richard had been a few seconds slower getting out, he would have been incinerated.”

This is far from Richard’s first brush with danger – back in 2006, he almost died in another accident, suffering serious brain injuries and earlier this year he was also involved in a motorbike crash.
