Richard Madeley morphs into Jeremy Paxman as he terminates interview with defence secretary Gavin Williamson

Good Morning Britain stand-in presenter Richard Madeley turned into Jeremy Paxman, after terminating an interview with defence secretary Gavin Williamson.

Speaking to Williamson, the current UK defence secretary, things went awry which led to the host spectacularly ending the interview.

And while people often laugh at Madeley’s, 62, similarities to fictional and satirical character Alan Partridge, the point he was trying to make was a valid one, when he appeared to turn into the early morning version of Paxman.

While speaking to Williamson, 41, via a live video link, Madeley, who is standing in for Piers Morgan, asked the defence secretary a simple and direct question.

‘Do you regret using very casual Trumpesque language like “shut up and go away”? Please don’t tell me what happened – because we know what happened – do you regret using that language? That is the question,’ an irate Madeley asked him.

And in true politician fashion, Williamson began to answer without actually answering: ‘Well, what was right is that we came together with our allies…’ before he was cut off.

‘Ok, alright, alright, alright, interview terminated because you won’t answer the question.

‘Good luck with the African elephant project, that is an excellent thing to do but it would be helpful if you answered a straight question with a straight answer.’

And just like that, the interview was over as co-host Charlotte Hawkins, 43, sat in silence and presumed bemusement.

Williamson could be seen glancing over the camera as if to get confirmation that the interview had indeed gone pear-shaped and his airtime was over.

Despite Morgan drumming up controversy of his own on GMB, it doesn’t appear like the drama has disappeared in the presenter’s absence.

Catch GMB each morning, from 6am, on ITV1.
