Richard Osman has shared how the entire set of his Thursday Murder Club film was starstruck by a visit from Steven Spielberg.

The Hollywood heavyweight is producing the big screen adaptation of Osman's best-selling novel, and he told The One Show that even its star cast were left speechless by Spielberg's arrival.

Osman also said that he thanked Spielberg for the films that he had loved as a child.

Osman might have landed a whole cast of national treasures for his Thursday Murder Club film, but he said that even they had been starstruck the day that producer Spielberg visited the set.

Speaking to The One Show, Pointless star Osman told how everyone had been lost for words as the man behind such classics as E.T., Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and Schindler's List arrived to see how filming was going.

He caught up with the cast who include Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan and Celia Imrie.

Osman said: "The day Spielberg came, everyone - even Sir Ben Kingsley and Dame Helen Mirren - they were like, 'oh my god, it's Spielberg', they were so excited.

"There were loads of supporting artists that day, and Steven Spielberg is shorter than me. As I was going past they were saying, 'it's Richard, it's Richard' and as I stepped aside they were saying 'oooh, it's Steven Spielberg!' Everyone was thrilled, he flew in on a helicopter, flew back out on a helicopter to the south of France."

"He was lovely, he was great, and humble. It was such a nice thing to be able to say thank you for everything, the joy he's given us and the stories he's told us," Osman added.

Keen fans of The Thursday Murder Club eagerly awaiting the film might already have spotted Spielberg's visit to set.

In August, Netflix shared the first photo of the cast together, along with Spielberg and Osman, sending fans into a frenzy of excitement.

They wrote: "Nothing to see here... just @richardosman, actual Steven Spielberg, and a few of their friends on the set of The Thursday Murder Club."

Home Alone, Harry Potter and Mrs Doubtfire director Chris Colombus is helming the movie and although a release date hasn't been announced, filming is due to wrap this month.

The film adaptation was first announced back in 2020, but lockdowns and the Hollywood writers' strike have meant it was heavily delayed.

The One Show airs on BBC One at 7pm on weekdays.
