Ricky Gervais is returning to host the Golden Globes a record fifth time.

The English comedian has previously officiated as the ceremony’s emcee in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016.

His hosting style has made headlines due to Gervais’s biting one-liners, aimed at stars such as Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, and Steve Carell.

Gervais has sworn that this year’s ceremony will mark his final turn as host. “Once again, they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse,” he said. “But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.”

As Gervais heads into his final night as the Golden Globes emcee, here are Gervais’s past performances during the ceremony, ranked from worst to best:

Paul Teledgy, the chairman of NBC Entertainment, which broadcasts the ceremony, predicted that Gervais’s fifth hosting gig would make for an “unexpected evening”.

“There is always a palpable electricity in the room when Ricky takes the Globes stage,” Teledgy said.

“His return as master of ceremonies at the Golden Globes is much anticipated ... We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve.”

The 77th Golden Globes will take place on 5 January, 2020.
