Riders Try to Hold on to Bikes Amid Gales That Forced Race Cancellation

Severe winds resulted in the cancellation of the Cape Town Cycle Tour in South Africa on March 12.

Footage from the race showed tandems falling over and riders losing control of their bikes amid the gales.

The race is reportedly the world largest timed race. More than 35,000 cyclists were reportedly expected to take part.

Event organisers said protest action, fires at Hout Bay, and the weather had all been factors in the cancellation, but singled out the wind as the determining factor.
