Rio Ferdinand has confirmed that both he spoke directly to Cristiano Ronaldo in a bid to talk the Manchester United legend out of joining Man City... and the phone call appears to have worked.

Man City have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Ronaldo, clearing the way for a shock return to Old Trafford.

United are said to have held discussions with the five-time world player of the year’s agent, Jorge Mendes, and a deal could be done this weekend.

City were offered the 36-year-old, who has made it clear he wants to leave Juventus, and were considered front-runners for his signature but have decided the deal is not one they wish to pursue.

United appeared to become an option when manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer held a press conference on Friday afternoon and said their former star “knows that we’re here”.

While talk of Ronaldo’s potential move to City gathered pace on Friday morning, Ferdinand tweeted a GIF of Leonardo Di Caprio from the film ‘Djano Unchained’, which has since become a celebratory meme.

There didn’t appear to be much to shout about from United fans’ perspectives at that point, but Ferdinand later confirmed that he had called Ronaldo in an attempt to talk him out of joining City.

Those talks appear to have played some part in Ronaldo deciding City wasn’t for him, and Ferdinand explained via his YouTube channel.

"It's a beautiful day man... Sir Alex Ferguson would have been the exactly the same, he would have hated to see Cristiano in a Man City shirt, just like any other person that's been connected for a long period of time with this football club.

“I rang him (Ronaldo) straight away: ‘What's going on? Tell me you're lying.’ Every type of no, no, no in the conversation.

“I'm like all the fans, I'm exactly the same and we are all the same like that: ‘Please tell me you're not going?’

I hope there's an announcement at some point and it's one that I would be happy with... it's the best, we’ve seen some great signings this summer.

“Hopefully we are sitting here waiting for something to unravel at some point.

“Before the transfer deadline window closes, hopefully Man United get what they are looking for.

“Transfer deadline day is just hype! It's just hype, and I love to be a part of the hype.”
