Rio Ferdinand has spoken out to thank fans for their support after last night's (March 29) airing of his heartbreaking documentary on grief, Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad.
Following Rio after the death of his wife Rebecca in 2015, the documentary saw him open up about grief, loss and the difficulty of raising three children without their mum.
The emotional programme touched a lot of viewers at home, who praised the former footballer for the courage and honesty he showed as he talked so openly about his experience.
Taking to Instagram to thank viewers for their messages, Rio said the response had been "overwhelming".
"Thank you for all your messages, care & support... it's been overwhelming... Going through this process has allowed my kids & myself to begin taking steps forward in a positive direction," he wrote.
Also thanking charities Child Bereavement UK and Jigsaw for their help, Rio wrote: "I would like to say a big thank you to my family & friends, everyone who helped make the doc, in particular Child Bereavement UK & Jigsaw who have been vital in this process...
"Lastly I would like to thank everyone at New Era Productions & @neweraglobalsports for your continued support over the last 10 years supporting me on and off the pitch. RF"
Appearing on This Morning earlier this week, Rio stressed the importance of talking about loss. "Talking is so important. My children need to see me talk and show emotion.
"Talking doesn't make the pain go away but it does help," he added.
