It looks like the Legends of Tomorrow will face off against Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) in season three of the show.

However, according to the people behind the show, it will not be in the way expected after his turn as a baddie in season two, despite him heading up a new team called the Time Bureau which could bring him into conflict with the Legends.

"In season 2, he was turned evil," executive producer Marc Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly.

"This is not Evil Rip. We're not making Rip a bad guy or that kind of villain, rather this is Rip as… the Ronny Cox in Beverly Hills Cop to our Eddie Murphy.

"He's the guy who's trying to do things the proper way, follow the rules, get things done with a certain level of efficiency, and here come our Legends of Tomorrow, who go about things a bit more unorthodox."

Rip was turned into a villain by the Legion of Doom in the last season, though eventually returned to the good side. However, he was last seen leaving the Waverider and the Legends behind for good.

Darvill recently confirmed his return, and opened up to Digital Spy about what we can expect from his character in season three.

"I don't know how much I can say – I'm definitely in it!" he said. "I know kind of what's happening, but you'll have to wait and see.

"It's very exciting, what's going to happen. I'm very happy with what we've come up with. They're very good at keeping us involved in how our stories pan out, so I'm really excited to see where it goes in the future. I think there'll be a few surprises in store for people!"

DC's Legends of Tomorrow returns to The CW in the US on Tuesday, October 10 at 9/8c. The series airs on Sky 1 in the UK.
