Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer look set to be coming to Grimsby to take part in a televised leaders' event during the general election campaign.

Labour leader Sir Keir has agreed to take part in the Sky News event that is set to take place in the coming weeks on Wednesday, June 12 which would see the hopefuls for Number 10 take questions from voters in North East Lincolnshire. The Prime Minister has reportedly not yet confirmed his attendance but "negotiations are ongoing" and a spokesperson for the Conservatives told Sky News that Mr Sunak "would be delighted to travel to Grimsby to take part in the Sky News leaders' event and answer questions from voters".

That will be "on the condition that he and Keir Starmer take those questions on stage together". "This will give viewers the best opportunity to see the clear choice the country faces at this election," the spokesperson added.

It comes after the broadcaster has focused on the Grimsby and Cleethorpes area among its election 'Target Towns', with the newly-redrawn constituency potentially proving to be a indicator of how the election will go on a national scale.

The Great Grimsby seat, which has become Grimsby and Cleethorpes, was last won by incumbent Conservative MP Lia Nici in the general election of 2019 - the first time the town had gone blue since the Second World War. It was previously held by Labour's Melanie Onn between 2015 and 2019, who is set to try to reclaim the seat in the upcoming poll on July 4.

Meanwhile, the boundary changes mean the Grimsby constituency will now include the town of Cleethorpes, with the rest of the old Cleethorpes constituency going into a new Brigg and Immingham constituency which will stretch from Humberston to the outskirts of Scunthorpe.

The proposed debate between Sir Keir and Mr Sunak would be one of a few set to be organised ahead of polling day involving the Labour and Conservative leaders. The Prime Minister has demanded the Labour leader agree to six TV debates but Sir Keir said he will take part on two against Mr Sunak - in addition to the Sky News leaders' special.

A Sky spokesperson said: "Sky News is delighted that Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has agreed to travel to Grimsby and answer voters questions in a Sky News leaders' special event.

"Negotiations are ongoing for Rishi Sunak to attend."
