Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer have confirmed they will come to Grimsby next week to take part in a special leaders' event ahead of the 2024 General Election.

The Prime Minister and Labour leader will head to North East Lincolnshire on Wednesday, June 12 for a Sky News programme that is set to be broadcast live in front of an audience who will put questions to the main candidates vying to be calling 10 Downing Street home the day after the national poll on July 4.

The broadcaster is asking people who would like to be part of the studio audience and given the opportunity to put a question to the party leaders to complete a questionnaire. The programme, The Battle For Number 10, A UK Election Leaders Special Event, will see Mr Sunak and Sir Keir put under scrutiny in front of a representative audience drawn from the local area, and nationally.

Sky News says the two men will look to pitch to voters in an in-depth interview before answering questions from the audience. As reported, Sir Keir agreed to take part in the event last week and talks were ongoing with Mr Sunak's team ahead of his attendance being confirmed.

After confirming the Prime Minister's attendance, a spokesperson for the Conservative party told Sky News: "Rishi Sunak looks forward to taking part in Sky News' leaders event next week.

"We hope that Sky will continue to work with the Labour Party to find a way to ensure both leaders are on stage taking questions from the live audience at the same time for at least part of the programme.

"And we hope that Keir Starmer can find the courage to agree. This would provide the best possible opportunity for voters to see the clear choice at this election."

There has been plenty of national media attention given to the Grimsby area ahead of the general election with Sky News describing it as a "key battleground". In 2019, Grimsby elected a Conservative MP for the first time since the end of the Second World War and, for this election, it will be part of a newly-expanded constituency including Cleethorpes.

Sky News was in Grimsby last week for a special edition of Politics Hub, presented by Sophy Ridge, which was broadcast from Centre4, in Nunsthorpe.
