"Riverdale"’s Creator Responded to Vanessa Morgan’s Criticisms of the Show: “We Will Do Better”

• The show's creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, just responded to Vanessa's criticisms on Instagram.

Riverdale star Vanessa Morgan has taken to social media this week to criticize the show for its handling of Black characters and now, the show's creator is responding and promising to make a change.

"We hear Vanessa. We love Vanessa," Riverdale creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote on Instagram. "She's right. We're sorry and we make the same promise to you that we did to her. We will do better to honor her and the character she plays. As well as all of our actors and characters of color."

He continued, "Change is happening and will continue to happen. Riverdale will get bigger, not smaller. Riverdale will be part of the movement, not outside it."

Roberto also revealed that all of the show's writers made a donation to Black Lives Matter LA, but ended his statement by saying, "we know where the work must happen for us. In the writer's room."

The statement comes after Vanessa called out the media for its poor representation of Black people. She wrote that she was "tired of us also being used as side kick, non-dimensional characters to our white leads," which many assumed was a reference to her character, Toni Topaz, on Riverdale.

Vanessa also addressed pay disparities, saying she is "paid the least" out of the show's series regulars, while also noting that she is the only Black person to have that distinction on the show.

Vanessa retweeted Roberto's statement on Twitter, though she hasn't commented on it, at least publicly.
