There were more twists and turns than a Fizzle Rocks trip in yesterday's mid-season finale of Riverdale, and it looks like things are only going to get stranger.

In the latest episode of the teen drama, fans watched as as the whole town was put under quarantine following a mass seizure at Riverdale High.

A townwide quarantine was never going to happen smoothly, though, and we saw Archie head to the Canadian border alone while Jughead found himself stranded outside the city limits.

We already knew that something "practically biblical" is set to go down in Riverdale, but now the series' executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has revealed just how "besieged" the town will be when we return next year.

Aguirre-Sacasa also confirmed yet another "time jump" when the series continues in January – and "different pairings" with it.

"We time-jumped over the summer, and there’ll be another bit of a time jump when we come back," he explained, "and we’ll see what Riverdale has been like under quarantine, and as a town besieged."

Hinting at one of the most significant time jumps yet, Roberto added: "When we come back, it’s definitely a changed Riverdale. It’s a very changed Riverdale."

It's time for some new fan theories, folks.

Riverdale airs on The CW in the US and Netflix in the UK.
