All the road closures as Surrey firefighters battle with Staines town centre blaze

Drivers are being told to avoid Stains town centre after a fire broke out. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene after being called on Wednesday, June 26 at 12.30pm.

Crews arrived at 12.35pm and quickly worked to extinguish the fire with the help of the London Fire Brigade. Passersby noticed the thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the roof of a high rise building near the Elmsleigh Centre.

Flames could also be seen from near the train station, on the site near the Tothill car park on Elmsleigh Road in Staines. To keep the area a clear zone, emergency services have asked all to avoid Staines town centre.

Furthermore, road closures have been put in place, to allow emergency services to access the area. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service announced the fire was under control at around 2pm on Wednesday, but still require access.

Thames Street in the town is shut between South Street and Church Street. Drivers are asked to avoid the area by Surrey Police.

A section of the A308 has been shut, which is where the Community Centre and Staines Library are. It is a major route in Staines that drivers will now need to avoid. No access will be given to the public to Elmsleigh Road, and South Street from Hale Road to the A308 has also closed.

South Street round the back of the shopping centre is also shut. Diversions will be in place and Police will direct drivers.

An evacuation of the Community Centre has been made, and everyone has been accounted for, according to a member of Spelthorne Council. South East Coast Ambulance Service were also in attendance to assess patients for smoke inhalation.
