Road-users will be fined £400 if they are caught littering during 'action days'
Fines of £400 will be handed out to road-users if they are caught littering on a “high-speed, busy” Leicestershire route during a number of “enforcement action days”. The anti-littering campaign will take place on the A5 over a period of four weeks.
A spokesperson for Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council (HBBC) said it faced “many challenges” cleaning the route as to do so safely, “costly and dangerous” traffic management must be installed. It said this also affected “traffic flow” for businesses along the road.
The council said the key aim of the campaign was to educate road-users on how they can report litter dropped from a vehicle, while informing them that littering from a vehicle can lead to a fine. From yesterday, (Monday, September 9), to Thursday, October 10, officers would be holding “enforcement action days” on the A5, where drivers caught littering will face a hefty penalty.

A spokesperson for HBBC said it was working with other councils for the campaign, including Blaby District and Harborough District Councils, supported by National Highways. Councillor Lynda Hodgkins, HBBC's executive member for parks, open spaces and neighbourhood services said: "This is an important campaign that aims to teach road users about the consequences of littering from their vehicles, and how they can report such incidents.
“Everybody knows they shouldn’t be littering. We hope that highlighting how easy it is to report littering and the hefty fine that can be issued will help drivers and passengers change their behaviour and take their litter home with them.
“It’s great to see other councils coming together to work on this campaign, and hopefully our collaborative efforts can have a lasting knock-on effect along the 243 miles of A5 that runs across the country.” Dropping litter from any vehicle, such as a car, van, lorry or scooter, is an offence.
To report dropped litter from a vehicle, search for 'dropped litter' on HBBC's website and complete a reporting form.
