Roads flood in West Midlands with water 'above wellies' as thunderstorms begin
Flooding has hit roads in the West Midlands today as a huge thunderstorm began. The first of heavy rain and thunderstorms battered the region this afternoon (September 21) after the Met Office issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms.
A total of three yellow weather warnings have been issued for large parts of the country for today, tomorrow and Monday (September 21, 22 and 23). Locally, the Government's Flooding Service has issued six flood alerts across Birmingham and the Black Country.
They are in place along rivers, waterways and areas prone to flooding. Among the places that have flooded include Erdington's Summer Road, which is blocked due to flooding from South Road to Machin Road tonight. Duck Lane in Codsall, South Staffordshire, has also been badly affected.

River Stour and Smestow Brook in the Black Country and South Staffordshire
Upper Tame at Sandwell Valley
Upper Tame in Birmingham
River Rea in Birmingham
River Cole in Birmingham
River Blythe in Solihull
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Jason Kelly said: "The risk of thunderstorms persists into the weekend with potentially longer spells of heavy rain for some along with a continued risk of hail and lightning accompanying the most intense storms. Parts of the Midlands, southern England and east Wales appear at greatest risk of seeing these conditions."
