Robbers who beat guard with hammer jailed for total of 28 years

Two robbers who beat a guard with a hammer and bar during a series of raids have been jailed for a total of 28 years.

Jason Graham, 41, and Carlos Carew-James, 32, stole cashboxes, targeting Loomis workers as they refilled cashpoints around south London. In one raid, a guard was struck over the head with a bar and beaten with a hammer.

At Inner London crown court yesterday, Graham was jailed for 16 years for three robberies and a £1,170 raid on a pub fruit machine, while Carew-James was sentenced to 12 years in jail for his involvement in two of the robberies.

“You demonstrated an increasing ruthlessness and there is evidence of planning. You were prepared to use violence if needed,” said Judge Mark Bishop.

“I urge you to use the time in custody so when you are released you can lead good lives and be a credit to your families.”

The court heard Graham attempted a first robbery at the end of July last year outside a Tesco in Croydon Road, Elmers End, but failed to grab the cashbox. He stole three boxes containing £57,000 on September 1 after threatening guard Nicholas Lyons outside a Tesco Express in Southampton Way, Camberwell.

Graham and Carew-James stole an empty cashbox they could not open on October 22. Two days later they stole £1,600 as Mohsin Raza refilled a cashpoint at Asda in the Old Kent Road.

Prosecutor Nicholas Cooper said CCTV showed “the first person struck [Mr Raza’s] helmet then his knee with the metal baton. The second struck him with a hammer with a heavy metal end.” He said Mr Raza “thought he was going to die and never see his children again”.

Graham, from Camberwell, denied four robberies, including a raid on a Wetherspoon fruit machine on June 26. He was convicted of them and attempted robbery, criminal damage, possession of a bladed article, and theft.

Carew-James, who lives in Gillingham, Kent, denied, but was convicted of, two counts of robbery. He had been jailed for six years in 2009 for killing a pensioner in a motorbike crash, when he was speeding and had no licence.
