Singer Robbie Williams believes he may be suffering from Asperger syndrome or autism.

The Angels singer has talked openly about his own afflictions, addictions, and personal mental health over the years, but now he claims he might have the answer to explain his mental state.

The star, 44, spoke to Radio 2 about his struggle with mental health and claimed, ‘There’s something missing in me‘.

‘I have big blind spots,’ he told the radio station. ‘Maybe Asperger’s or autism. I don’t know what spectrum I’m on – I’m on something.

‘It’s quite hard work being in my head – I have an interesting compulsion, addiction, mental illness, I’d say.’

Williams, who recently performed at the World Cup’s opening ceremony earlier this month in Russia, said that he’d be experiencing the same mental health battle whatever his profession or level of fame: ‘I would have that if I was Robbie Williams the pop star or Robert Williams the labourer.

‘Day-to-day, things change. I do the same things as the day before, but today’s a different day and I don’t know why it’s difficult to get out of bed. It’s just who I am.’

He also noted that the birth of his kids, Teddy, 5, and Charlton, 3, has given him the strength to carry on and gain a new perspective on life. But he admitted there are negative thoughts that creep into his head, despite having a loving family around him: ‘What is interesting is my compulsion … to go and seek bad stuff about myself,’ he said.

‘I’m addicted to the rush… to going, “I’m an idiot. I can’t sing. That song was bad”. It’s a curse and a blessing because it propels me forward and has made me the person I am today.’

He recently revealed the extent of his mental health issues, saying: ‘I’ve got a disease that wants to kill me and it’s in my head, so I have to guard against that.

‘Sometimes it overwhelms me and sometimes it’s a tool I need to get on stage. Sometimes I live in bliss and it’s wonderful.’

The singer is reportedly about to join the X Factor judging team for its upcoming series, with Louis Walsh having left the reality TV programme after 13 years.
