Robbie Williams has been at the centre of a media storm recently – not just for giving planet Earth the middle finger at the World Cup - but also because he's rumoured to be taking over as a judge on The X Factor.

Speaking to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on This Morning, Robbie said: "I think if there is an X Factor in my future, whether if it be this year or next year or never, I am scared for my own safety and health, but not because of the people out there, or the public or Twitter or Instagram – my wife.

"She's a grade A+ student from Beverly Hills, incredibly square and is like, 'Why would you do that' and I'm from Stoke."

However, Phil pointed out that the recent rumours had placed Robbie's wife, Ayda Field, alongside him as a potential new judge, following Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger's confirmed departure from the show.

Robbie replied: "She is supposed to be doing it with me, I've read these reports too."

Phil then explained that staff at This Morning's ITV studios think the rumours about the singer joining the show might be true.

"I've got to tell you, there is a buzz within this building, that this is actually more than discussion, this is pretty close that you and Ayda will be on that panel," said Phillip.

"I would say because I've read the articles and the press too..." began Robbie.

"You're doing really well by the way," commented Holly, as Robbie continued to dodge answering definitively whether he's joining the X Factor panel or not.

"How long have I got left?" asked Robbie, as Phil warned that he couldn't just waste time until the interview was over.

FINALLY, Robbie said: "So, I would understand that if people read the reports then they would think that I was doing The X Factor and my wife was doing The X Factor. As it happens, people say that every year, we always say, 'No comment'."

Phil suggested Simon Cowell was requesting Robbie keep silent on joining the show to encourage speculation.

Robbie continued: "Yeah, there is a lot of me that would love to do it too, but as it happens, people are talking, but there's nothing signed.

"Me and Simon and Lauren [Silverman] and the kids and little Eric hang out an awful lot and we talk about a lot of things.

"Nothing signed, but, you know, watch this space and of course it's on ITV and I promise you, if it's a go ahead and we do it, [This Morning] will be the first people I come and speak to about it."

"I look forward to when you have one contestant left" joked Holly, in reference to Robbie's claims his World Cup middle finger was actually a fumbled countdown.

Speaking of which, Robbie attempted to explain swearing at billions of people during his World Cup opening ceremony performance – and potentially breaking Russian law.

He said: "I don't know what I'm going to do at any time. There's no, sort of, plan. The plan was, sing in key, don't fall over. That was the plan and 99% of the plan, I pulled off."

This Morning continues weekdays from 10.30am.
