Former Liverpool star Roberto Firmino was on the receiving end of a shock defeat in Saudi Arabia. The Brazil international left the Reds in the summer of 2023 to join Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League.

The forward had spent eight years with Liverpool after arriving at Anfield from Hoffenheim and won six major trophies, including the Champions League and Premier League. Firmino has since gone on to become one of the star strikers for Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League.

Monday night saw Al Ahli face Al Jandal in the King Cup of Champions fixture, but they were on the receiving end of a 2-1 defeat at home. Adbulluh Matuq and Yassine Amri scored for the visitors, while summer signing and former Brentford striker Ivan Toney scored what proved to be a consolation for Al Ahli.

Firmino played the full 90 minutes for Al Ahli, who are currently sixth in the Saudi Pro League table. Their opponents, Al Jandal, are 16th in the second tier of professional football in Saudi Arabia and hand a shock defeat to one of the favourites for the competition.

Before beating Al Ahli on Monday night, Al Jandal had lost three of their first four league matches this season but did claim a 1-0 win over 11-placed Ohod in their previous fixture in the league.

Firmino has made seven appearances for Al Ahli in all competitions this season, scoring three goals, including two in the Saudi Pro League. The 32-year-old former Liverpool star will hope to return to winning ways when Ah Ahli face Al Qadisiyah at the weekend before travelling to face Al Wasl next midweek in the AFC Champions League second matchday.
