Granted – we probably don't need another Robin Hood movie, but we're getting one anyway, so prepare yourselves.

Robin Hood: Origins promises a "gritty" take on the classic Nottingham legend, with Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton as Robin, Fifty Shades man Jamie Dornan as Will Scarlet and Rogue One's Ben Mendelsohn as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Talking to Collider, producer Basil Iwanyk explained that part of the inspiration was John Wick.

"The images of Robin Hood, the imagery we have, the production design, the stunt work that we're doing – a lot of it was inspired by the John Wick stunt work. The stuff we're doing with the bow and arrow, it's the same thing that Keanu does with the gun. The costumes, it just feels different than any other Robin Hood we had," he said.

The script was written by Joby Harold, who was recently signed on to do a complete overhaul of the script for DC's The Flash movie after a second director quit the project (Rick Famuyiwa, who replaced Seth Graham-Smith).

And Iwanyk reckons amid the stunts, the grit and the ultraviolence, his Robin Hood movie will also be a more youthful retelling of the story.

"I feel that it captures the adventure and the fun and the spirit of Robin Hood," he said, before pulling the rug out from under us.

"But because it's the origin story – it's a kid going off to war thinking he's going on a great Crusade, and realising it's all bullshit and coming back with some PTSD and realising he's been lied to, and coming back to kind of a fractured society that doesn't really accept him and realising, 'Okay the super rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer'."

So not quite so fun, then.

"What Joby Harold, our writer, was able to do is make it feel very allegorical and very contemporary, and feel youthful but not youthful in a YA way, youthful in a kind of, the anger, the energy, what people when they were 25 feel, without it being pandering like, 'Look, we're the young version of the movie!'"

Robin Hood: Origins is due for release on March 23, 2018.
