Robot Wars final cranks the carnage up to 11

The ‘Robot Wars’ final is here… and it’s glorious.

It’s been an impressive return for ‘Robot Wars’. We’ve seen some fan favourites back in the contest (such as Storm 2) as well as plenty of newcomers. We’ve even seen some crazy new designs such as the fibreglass wonder, Terror Turtle.

But sadly, he didn’t do too well.

Still, it’s the big finale with 6 impressive robots going head-to-head for the ‘Robot Wars’ title. Who will prevail? Which robots will go home in pieces? Let’s find out…

First things first, here’s a rundown of every bot in the final:

TR2 features the youngest team captain in the competition: “flipping the competition left, right and centre”. But with its pneumatic axe, can it smash through the rest of the robots to claim victory?

Carbide is apparently the most feared robot in the pits. I’m not so sure about that, but its green and black bodywork certainly looks formidable. Will they smash the competition into bits? That remains to be seen.

Apollo is back… and after taking on THREE house robots in one episode, they’re my personal favourites to take home the ‘Robot Wars’ championship. One of the most impressive machines in the competition (and a great team to boot) it’s looking good for Apollo.

Shockwave is a complete newcomer. Having never fought before, it seems this powerful robot was a complete ringer. Coming out of nowhere to destroy their opponents, Shockwave has already made one hell of a performance. A win here would be the icing on the cake.

Pulsar is a spinner - with its 9000 RPM weapon, it’s mangled its way through to the finals. Chewing up and spitting out every robot it’s come up against, it looks as though Pulsar is one to watch… and with its low ground clearance and impressive weapon, they might leave some of the other finalists without a leg to stand on.

Thor is the last, axe-wielding finalist - one of the competition’s many runners up who managed to secure a place in the finals. It’s one of the most impressive-looking robots in the contest… and that axe conjures up all kinds of carnage. But can it conquer the flippers?

How did they fare?

Let’s take a look at the group rounds:

image

The first group saw TR2 taking on Thor and Pulsar… and it was quite a battle. Charging head first into the fight, Pulsar seemed to be making all the right moves. That is, until they stopped moving entirely. After losing mobility, it was all over - the other robots took full advantage of the situation… and even the house robot, Shunt lobbed an axe or two their way.

Winners: TR2 and Thor

The second group saw Apollo, Carbide and Shockwave heading into the arena. Carbide is the robot to beak with a 25kg spinner that can turn any chassis to mush… and after taking out the arena wall, Carbide managed to chew up and spit out Shockwave. Unable to repair, they were forced to concede the match. A violent victory for Carbide.

Winners: Apollo and Carbide

That leaves Apollo, Carbide, Thor and TR2 in the head to head.

Impressively, Carbide managed to utterly destroy Thor - peeling off thick layers of armour like a knife through butter. Apollo performed just as well in their first match, taking on fellow flipper TR2. But in their match up with Carbide, it all went sideways. In just a few seconds, Carbide had immobilised the Apollo team… but kept coming with the attacks, anyway.

The end result?

After several impressive match ups, it’s Apollo and Carbide in the final.

One of the most gripping finals we’ve seen in a long time, both Apollo and Carbide lost their weapons… but Apollo was on the attack for a LONG time before they were forced to back off. Going to a judges’ decision, this is the final we were all hoping for. It was an incredible fight. But APOLLO clinched it!

That’s right - Apollo is 2016’s ‘Robot Wars’ winners.

It was an incredible final with some truly impressive robots and amazing drivers. Will Team Apollo be able to defend their titled? We’ll have to wait for the next series of ‘Robot Wars’ to find out.
