Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's Karen Gillan wants one of her co-stars to receive more credit for the franchise's success.

Although his face is never shown on-screen (as Rocket), Sean Gunn is every bit as critical as Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana because he motion-captures each of Rocket Racoon's scenes along with the rest of the cast. (Sean also plays Ravager Kraglin.)

During an interview with Digital Spy to promote the highly-awaited Marvel movie, Karen singled out Sean Gunn as an unsung hero of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

"I think of Sean [when I think of Rocket]," Karen told us. "Just because that's who we interact with every day on set. He definitely sculpts the performance because the whole animation is based on the acting that he's doing in the moment."

Not that Karen is dissing the impact of Rocket's voice: "Bradley [Cooper] comes in and puts his voice on it and takes it to the next level. But I interacted with Sean a lot and he puts a lot into the character. I feel like he deserves more credit than he gets for it."

(James Gunn and Sean Gunn on set)

The motion capture was a bit trickier for Groot this time around, since he's Baby Groot now. Director James Gunn actually used a doll-sized stand-in figure to represent him in each scene.

"It was the cutest thing ever," Karen beamed. "But then [her character] Nebula didn't find it cute at all so I had to suppress a lot of that. So they gave us a little doll now, so I have one in my house now!"

All of this meticulous motion-capture and CGI work will finally pay off when the visually-stunning Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 opens in the UK on April 28 and in the US on May 5. Watch Digital Spy speak with the cast at Monday's European premiere below:
