Rocketman: Kingsman star Taron Egerton to play Elton John in biopic

Kingsman and Eddie the Eagle actor Taron Egerton will play Elton John in the upcoming biopic Rocketman.

Covering the musician’s rise from prodigal pianist studying at in London to global superstar while “stripping back the glitter”, the movie will be direct Dexter Fletcher, who recently took over from Bryan Singer as director of Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

According to Deadline, who initially made the announcement, Egerton will sing multiple songs by Elton, sources telling the publication that the actor’s voice has blown producers away during auditions.

Last year, the actor spoke to The Independent about his singing aspirations while promoting the movie Sing: “I’m desperate to do a musical, and I’m trying to find one. Or find someone who will let me do one. I mean, it’s about someone presenting me with an opportunity really, but I’d bite their hand off if they did. I think it’s about time we had some.”

Matthew Vaughn – director of both Kingsman movies – has been attached to produce Rocketman, along with Elton and his Rocket Pictures partner David Furnish. Paramount Pictures are reportedly looking to distribute.

Earlier this year, Elton revealed his retirement plans, confirming he will play no more live shows following a 300-date worldwide tour titled Farewell, Yellow Brick Road World Tour.

Meanwhile, Egerton will next appear in the upcoming adaptation of Robin Hood, playing the titular character. Fellow cast members include Jamie Foxx, Ben Mendelsohn, and Eve Hewson.
