Rocky Fielding says his size advantage can help him stun Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in New York on Saturday.

Boxing superstar Canelo holds the WBA (Super) and WBC middleweight belts but is stepping up against the Britain in an attempt to become a three-weight world champion.

The Mexican, 28, confirmed his status as the biggest name in the sport by winning a rematch against the long-serving Kazakh middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in September.

But 31-year-old Fielding, who at 6ft 1in is five inches taller than his rival, is more a natural super-middleweight and holds the WBA (regular) title.

Fielding said: “The big ingredient to the fight is that I’m a big super-middleweight and he’s stepping up.

“That’s what makes it interesting — to see how he is going to adapt.

“I can make the weight comfortably and I’m okay at it. I don’t know how it’s going to be for him.

“But for me to fight at Madison Square Garden against the biggest name in boxing is unbelievable.

“They can say I have got a puncher’s chance and that is all. But I’m a good fighter and a good boxer. I’ll show them what chance I really have.

“I’m prepared well so we’ll have to see what happens. I made my my professional debut in Lancashire before a couple hundred people.

“That’s where I started. And I’ve had a lot of setbacks outside the ring. But I might wake up on Sunday as the face of boxing and it’s a great feeling.”

Fielding has won 27 fights and has been beaten only once, by Callum Smith in November 2015, and the fellow Brit has since gone on to become a world champion at super-middleweight. Fielding says he will be inspired by Tyson Fury following the heavyweight’s draw with WBC champion Deontay Wilder in Los Angeles.

Fielding added: “That was a big fight for Tyson. I was over the moon. We have a bit of a crazy friendship — we were in the ABA finals together and we’ve both had the benefit of fighting for a world title. So it’s a great story.

“Fury is massive in the UK and everyone is behind him. I’ve got good support coming over and hopefully I’ll give it everything on the night and everyone around the world will supports me.”

Fielding earned his fight with Canelo by defeating Germany’s Tyron Zeuge in Offenburg in July.

He added: “Travelling to Germany and getting the win is a big achievement. No one gave me a chance. Now everything has gone really well in this camp and hopefully it is going to pay off in New York.”
