Liverpool will continue its quest for Europa League glory on Thursday night when it takes on Serie A side Atalanta at Anfield. The Reds remain favorites to go on and win the competition but will not have it all their own way in the quarter-final tie.

While preparations for that match will be stepped up, Liverpool may also have one eye on Champions League affairs, with its two Premier League title rivals in action. Arsenal takes on Bayern Munich in the last eight while holder Manchester City is in Spain to take on Real Madrid.

Real has won the competition in four of the last eight seasons and will be eyeing more glory with its attacking line-up of Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo as dangerous as any in world football.

The latter may arguably be the least glamorous of the trio but has scored 14 times this season. Rodrygo, 23, joined Real in 2019 from Santos but has revealed his career could have taken a very different path a couple of years earlier.

Speaking to The Guardian, he revealed he rejected the chance to join Liverpool in a deal worth just $3.3m (£2.6m/€3m) in 2017. He adds: "We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to. I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good.

"The pathway promised to me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football. It had always been my dream to play in Europe. Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder.

"I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I was able to fulfil my dream of playing for Santos. But it’s true, I almost went to Liverpool.”

Rodrygo's admission comes amid fresh links over a move to Anfield. His future at the Bernabeu past this season is unclear, with Kylian Mbappé set to arrive on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain this summer, alongside Brazil sensation Endrick.

Spanish newspaper Sport has reported that Rodrygo could consider his future if he loses his place, with Liverpool watching developments alongside Manchester United and Arsenal. Any interested club will have to pay a significant fee to get him though, with Real likely to demand at least $109m (£86m/€100m). says: The Reds completed the signing of a certain Egyptian in the summer of 2017 but it appears they were close to pulling off another huge coup. Ultimately, Rodyrgo opted to stay in Brazil and has taken his career to an incredible level since signing for Real Madrid. He could finally get a crack at the Premier League this summer but it is a deal Liverpool could probably only consider if a big name attacker departs.
