Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was one of the better Star Wars films, but while a direct sequel to that film including those characters taking place is pretty much impossible – A New Hope is the only sequel we'll be seeing there – we could be getting the next best thing.

John Knoll, the film's story co-creator (and executive producer and visual-effects supervisor) revealed at a National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show panel on Wednesday (April 26) that he does have another Star Wars story idea in mind at the moment.

Which is reason enough to get excited if you ask us.

"I have another idea I've been tinkering with," he said at the event (via THR). "It's maybe 75 percent there.

"I haven't pitched it to [Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy]. It's another Star Wars thing."

There's been a lot of talk of upcoming films in the Star Wars franchise recently as anticipation builds for Episode VIII's The Last Jedi and 2018's planned Han Solo spin-off film.

In fact, earlier this week Kennedy herself admitted that Lucasfilm are beginning to talk about future spin-offs now – so if ever there was a time to pitch, John, we'd go for it soon – and speaking at the NAB Show, Knoll supported the plan for more films based in the Star Wars universe.

"There's no reason to think Disney is going to stop wanting to make Star Wars movies if there's quality and there's interest," he added.

"It has unlimited potential. It has a huge number of characters, worlds… It's a massive playground."

The next film to look forward to in the Star Wars playground will be The Last Jedi on December 15. Watch a trailer below:
