Rolls- Royce is about to break into the 4×4 market with potentially the most ever expensive mass-production SUV.

Pictures emerged this week of the Rolls Royce of the future – the Cullinan, which could cost up to £300,000.

It could be on the roads – and according to early critics – straight into footballers’ garages by as early as 2018.

The two new pictures gave the first real glimpse of the Cullinan, even though it was covered prototype zebra camouflage to hide any details from rivals.

They were released to mark the beginning of the luxury car’s road test schedule in the UK.

“This is an incredibly exciting moment in the development of Project Cullinan both for Rolls-Royce and for the patrons of luxury that follow us around the world,” said Torsten Muller-Otvos, Rolls Royce CEO.

The luxury SUV market is becoming as crowded as Britain’s major roads.

Rolls Royce is following in the slipstream of Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Maserati as well as Bentley, which unveiled its Bentayga earlier this year.

The car will be officially unveiled next year and in the meantime will undergo further testing in the Arctic Circle and Dubai to see how it performs in extreme weather.

Early responses have been mixed, with some online saying the car is destined to be a footballers’ favourite.

No official price has yet been revealed but it could be in the same price bracker as the Rolls Royce phantom, which retails at around £300,000.
