Netflix is to release a romantic-comedy with a twist – or possibly not a twist – as viewers will get to decide the middle and ending.

Choose Love stars Laura Marano, Avan Jogia, Jordi Webber and Scott Michael Foster, and the interactive element will be a first for a rom-com from the streaming giant. Stuart McDonald, the director of the Crazy Ex Girlfriend series, has directed the film which picks up with Cami Conway (Marano) in a life that would be perfect if only she could stop romanticising her old relationships.

Her sentimentality leads to a fear of commitment and choices that are so difficult that the viewer will need to make them for her. Different outcomes are pre-recorded by the producers and viewers will be able to choose which reality they want to play out.

It will be released on August 31. Netflix has previously released interactive films such as Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Cat Burglar, Headspace: Unwind Your Mind, and the upcoming Trivia Quest.

The official synopsis reads: “Is it just FOMO and the fear of commitment that goes with it?

“Or is she actually missing out on an even better career, perhaps the long abandoned singing career she once dreamed of? And is Paul (Foster) the love of her life? What if it’s Rex Galier (Jogia), the sexy British rock star who walks into her studio and becomes irrepressibly smitten? Or could it be Jack Menna (Webber), her first love, ‘the one that got away,’ the idealistic world traveller, who returns home and is ready to rekindle their youthful passion?”

Choose Love will be released towards the end of a busy summer of original films from Netflix, which will include The Mother with Jennifer Lopez, Extraction 2 starring Chris Hemsworth, and Heart of Stone with Gal Gadot.
