Roman Kemp reflects on 'terrifying' Champions League final experience

Radio presenter Roman Kemp has opened up on his experience at the Champions League final in Paris where he was tear-gassed by French police.

Attending to watch Liverpool take on Real Madrid, the lead up to the game was marred by issues with organisation and police.

On his Capital Radio breakfast show, Kemp described his experience of the game, which he called 'horrific'.

He talked about being part of a group of fans who were 'funnelled' through a tunnel to the stadium: "The second we got there, it was hostility straightaway. One of my mates is having a panic attack at the time and saying 'I just need to get out'."

Kemp then detailed the clash with the French police who were criticised on social media for their treatment of fans: "The police... they're just laughing at the fans and then all of a sudden tear gas starts getting thrown at us, pepper spray starts coming out from the top."

He added: "People were trying to hold up their kids. It was the worst experience I've ever had in a football ground. It was really, really scary."

Kemp also called for the policing of the event to be investigated: "It was just so, so horrendous. It was discriminatory against Liverpool fans. And the reason I say that they should investigate it is because when we got in there, all the Real Madrid fans were in there and the Liverpool fans were not in there at all. It was crazy. It was absolutely crazy."

Various British MP's have also called for an investigation into the events before kick-off including Ian Byrne who attended the match.

He compared the scenes to the Hillsborough disaster which killed 97 Liverpool fans in 1989.

Byrne has written to the foreign secretary Nadine Dorries to demand a formal probe and apologies from the French authorities and Uefa who organised the game.

Real Madrid beat Liverpool 1-0 thanks to a goal from Vinicius Junior in the 59th minute. It was Madrid's record 14th Champions League title.
