Romelu Lukaku is convinced he can replicate his record-breaking international form at club level, but believes Manchester United are failing to get the best out of him.

Lukaku has now gone seven games without a goal for United – equalling his longest barren run since his £75m move from Everton last summer.

He has endured no such issues for his country – becoming Belgium’s all-time leading scorer last year and starring for Roberto Martinez’ side as they reached the World Cup semi-finals in the summer.

The 25-year-old also scored twice against Switzerland in the last international break, taking his tally to 45 goals in 79 caps.

But Lukaku claims he is still waiting to completely click with his United team-mates – and only then will he produce his finest form.

“With Belgium I've been playing for 10 years, since I was 16,” he said. “Players know me much more. Here I still think my teamwork between myself and my teammates can improve and be much better.

“It's something that we're working on. The players need to know me and know my movement. When that starts clicking I think the results I have with Belgium will also come here.”

Despite Lukaku’s own struggles, United have shown their attacking potential with five goals in their last two games against Newcastle and Chelsea.

On both occasions they were forced to mount second half fightbacks after slow starts, which Lukaku claims is the fault of the players – not Jose Mourinho.

“We have a plan every time we go against a team, but I don't know how to explain it,” he said. “It's just something we need to get out of.

“Offensively we are set up really well, but then it's on the ball where we need to make a difference.

“In the first half (against Chelsea) we started slowly - no initiative on the ball, no movement. In the second half, everything that we said we wanted to do in the first half we did.

“That's why we came back and got great results. Now the key is to start games like we do in the second half.”

Lukaku added: “It's going to take time to be where we want to be, but the last two games have shown that we can play, we can press forward and we have played to make a difference.

“The work that we're doing behind the scenes has to be delivered into wins.”
