Romelu Lukaku is being promised a lukewarm reception on his return to Inter Milan with supporters receiving a list of rules over how to treat the striker, which includes no longer regarding him as a “King”.
The Curva Nord supporters group issued the instructions to supporters on Instagram after Inter agreed a £7million deal to re-sign Lukaku on loan for 12 months.
Lukaku left Inter under a cloud last year when he rejoined Chelsea for £97.5million and the Curva Nord group have made it clear that fans are not yet ready to welcome back with open arms.
Among the instructions is a warning not to greet Lukaku, who is due to take his Inter medical ahead of his unveiling within the next week, with scarves and banners, and that he must earn any future adoration.
Lukaku was pictured embracing members of Curva Nord when he first moved to Inter from Manchester United in 2019, but the mood is different ahead of his return from Chelsea.
Set out as a list of instructions, a Curva Nord statement said: “Since Lukaku will return to Inter, there are some points to be made very clear.
“The Curva Nord supports Inter and will not make any objection to the player (despite last summer’s behaviour). But nobody should go and welcome him with scarves or banners of the Curva or the groups that make it.
“Everything that will eventually be done towards him in the future will have to be earned on the ground with humility and sweat. He was supported (and treated) like a king, now he is one like many.”
There was some encouragement for Lukaku in the Curva Nord statement, which promised they will never jeer him, but it added: “However, we invite all Interists (Inter fans) not to fall into the opposite trap, to rush immediately to drool behind him. We took note of Lukaku’s betrayal and were very ill. A footballer can also be forgiven these things over time, but they remain.”
